What Is Onsen Technique?
The term ”Onsen“ is Japanese. Loosely translated, it means “at peace” or “at rest”. It’s all about the balance and harmony between all of the body’s systems.
An understanding of these principles can help torwards a complete and lasting change – pain relief – and that’s great in any language!
When dealing with pain, it is important to understand how structural imbalances can cause neuro-musculoskeletal pain. The forces generated by these imbalances can be enormous, and every tissue in the body is affected when it is abnormally compressed or stretched due to these forces.
Structural imbalances can be corrected using an osteopathic technique known as Muscle Energy Technique. Put simply, this is using a stretching protocol to stretch muscles that are holding the skeleton in an unbalanced position. Tissues can be overstretched or they can be shortened. Both can ‘feel tight’ and can be responsible for pain.
Structural assessment is the art of identifying structural distortions and recognising the type of structural stress that various parts of the body are under. When structural stress is the source of pain, the only long-lasting way to alleviate the pain is to correct the structure. To work out which muscle is the problem, a thorough functional evaluation is performed. This will identify range of motion imbalances, identify strength imbalances and reproduce the patient’s symptoms.

For most of my life, I have been a dairy farmer and organic beef farmer. In 2005 I began my studies in massage therapy, graduating in February 2007 with a Diploma in Remedial Massage Therapy. Each year since then, I have attended the Association of Massage Therapists (AMT) annual conference where I have completed workshops in a broad range of different treatment types.
Since 2010, I began studying Onsen Therapy under the guidance of Jeff Murray (Director of Massage Therapy for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney) and became a Certified Onsen Therapy Therapist (COTT) in November 2019. Onsen Therapy is a structural assessment and adjustment of the skeletal system using Muscle Energy Technique (MET).
In my working career as a remedial therapist, I worked for 4 years at the Murray College of Health Education in Victoria, helping to guide the next generation of therapists. I have run my own successful clinic in Northern Victoria for 13 years. At the same time, I was involved in corporate massage therapy at a local abattoir for 7 of those years. I was an active member of the Regional Riverina Branch of AMT, including several years as President.
My motto is to treat the cause, not just the symptoms. Onsen Therapy has taught me to very accurately assess the muscular and skeletal systems, which enables me to pin point the cause of the symptoms. My aim is to improve your mobility and reduce your pain.
